Description in the Javanese wayang retellings: He is the God of death, responsible for collecting the souls of mortals when their time comes. He has the head of an ogre. He was married to Dewi [Mumpuni], but she left him and married Batara Nagatatmala. He once fought Desamuka, an event that almost triggered the end of the world.

Notes on the Indian retellings: Yama is the lord of death.
