Description in the Javanese wayang retellings: The God of beauty and the God of soldiers. He also controls lightning. Arjuna is in reality his descendant. He has an elephant named [Erawana] that he uses as a form of transportation. He is in charge of distributing boons and amulets from the Gods to the mortals. For instance, he gave the Pasopati heirloom weapon to Arjuna. He also gives heavenly nymphs as prizes to humans, monkeys and giants, such as Dewi [Tara] to Sugriwa and Dewi [Tari] to Desamuka.
Notes on the Indian retellings: Known as Indra or Devendra, the King of Devas (celestial beings). His wife is known as Indrani. Indra is also mentioned in the /Krishna Leela/ (the divine acts of Krishna). In the story, the fellow villagers of Lord Krishna perform prayers to ask Indra for rain. Krishna asks them to stop and this enraged Indra. He punished the villagers by causing severe thunderstorms. However, Krishna protected the villagers in the end. He is the son of Maharesi Kasyapa and Devi Aditi.
