Setyaboma

Terms of address: Dewi

Type: Human

Origin: India

Description in the Javanese wayang retellings: She married Kresna in his youth, when he was still known as Narayana. Durna had wanted to marry her, but he failed to win her in a contest (his deputy in the fight [Dursasana] lost to Kresna). Setyaboma was then kidnapped by [Kalawresni] from Dwarawati. Together with Arjuna, Kresna recovered Setyaboma, killing King Yuda_Kala_Kresna. In the Sanskrit version and some Javanese versions, she falls in love with Arjuna and Kresna gives her to him. After Kresna died, she committed ritual suicide.

Notes on the Indian retellings: Satyabhama is known as the second wife and one of the main wives of Lord Krishna. She faced opposition in marrying Krishna from her brother and father. She is seen as the incarnation of the Earth Goddess, Bhudevi and is known for her short temper. She was of a strong disposition and even accompanied Lord Krishna during his battle with Narakasura.
